Synthetic Vitamin E (Alpha Tocopherol Acetate) is an essential fat-soluble vitamin that horses cannot synthesise themselves and must obtain through their diet. It is included to contribute to normal antioxidant function, normal immune function, and normal muscle and nerve health.
While fresh grass naturally supplies Vitamin E, its concentration decreases as plants mature, and its potency declines rapidly once forage is harvested and dried. Research indicates that between 30% and 80% of Vitamin E activity can be lost between cutting and baling, with further losses occurring during storage. Horses are also not considered efficient at storing Vitamin E, meaning deficiencies can develop relatively quickly without adequate dietary intake.
Certain horses have an increased nutritional requirement for Vitamin E due to elevated oxidative demands. This includes performance horses, those in heavy work, growing horses, pregnant and lactating mares, senior horses, and horses with limited access to fresh green grass.
For horses requiring the highest bioavailability, our Natural Vitamin E (RRR alpha-tocopherol) is also available and is considered to offer superior absorption compared to the synthetic form.
